Wearable ART

Heidi Wikara Royal Collage of Art MA graduate, said that this collection is, “a statement about the environmental changes in the northern Scandinavian winter, due to global warming.” Following this, the clothes have a highly functional use too, as the clothes are designed to maximise the flowing of air both up and down, to increase insulation but now impact the lightweights of the garments.

2nd Skin Watch

Second Skin’ a prototype watch by Russian-born, New York based designer, Svetlana Blum. The futuristic design works as both a captivating time-piece and stylistic bangle. Made out of PU and metal, the LED lights switch on through a touch of the surface display in order to reveal the time. The time’s displayed in a simple format, showing the the hours on one side and five-minute intervals of the hour, on the other. The designer has recently exhibited other works which involve the conceptualisation of light, including a recent instillation piece at the Light Art Biennial in Austria this year.

Creep S/S 2011

Taking on Hiroshi Awai as the creative director in 2008, Creep has enjoyed continued success under the Toronto-based designer. Pushing an agenda of Japanese sensibilities with traditional utilitarian American workwear, the combination is apparent in various cases over the brand’s 2011 spring/summer collection. Light-colored patterns and a generally more casual aesthetic are prominent traits for this forth coming range.

I Loved the hippy sense of it.

Gareth Pugh

The radical geometries of Gareth Pugh's monochromatic designs are like armoury for futuristic night fighters. Although associated to the Rick Owens group and quite macabre, Gareth emanates more of a sense of adventure and the essence of British fashion.

Jean Paul Gaultier for La Perla

GaultierLingerie is part of my DNA and of my heritage. It is now almost thirty years since I have designed my first corset dress, and in my latest prĂªt-Ă -porter collection I revisited the conical bras and corsets worn as outerwear. This collaboration was a natural and logical step especially since La Perla is the pearl of the lingerie, with a long history and the best savoir faire.

The awaited Jean Paul Gaultier for La Perla lingerie collection is set to hit the stores in November

Jane Bowler's Fusion

Jane Bowler’s avant-garde raincoats, Sculpted from recycled and reappropriated plastics, including shower curtains, Bowler’s “Fusion” collection marries the poles-apart aesthetic of the traditional Japanese straw coat and the classic British macintosh. The Royal College of Art graduate’s process is completely stitch-free, a combination of industrial techniques such as heat-forming and ultrasonic welding. (The latter method involves high-frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations to bind materials together.)

"Fusion is designed to make plastic fantastic for longer,” she says. “And to create a garment that the owner will be reluctant to throw away.”

Fusion will be on display at the Royal College of Art’s Upper Gulbenkian Gallery, as part ofLondon Design Week, from September 23 to October 7.
